Episode 8: Reel, Carwile, and Stollings
/

In this episode, Hyde and Holbrook discuss three cases decided by the North Carolina Court of Appeals on December 17, 2024. In State v. Reel, COA23-711, the Court of Appeals rejected the defendant’s challenge to a warrantless search of his home based on exigent circumstances. In State v. Carwile, COA23-885, the Court of Appeals concluded that the defendant was not entitled to a Castle Doctrine instruction after pursuing the intruder to an adjoining lot and there beating him to death. And in State v. Stollings, COA24-138, the Court of Appeals remanded for additional findings where the trial court’s order denying the defendant’s motion to suppress did not resolve pertinent questions of fact.
