Episode 29: Barthel, Wilson, and Hickman
/

In this episode, Hyde and Holbrook discuss three cases decided by the North Carolina Court of Appeals on November 5, 2025. In State v. Barthel, No. COA25-159 (N.C. Ct. App. Nov. 5, 2025), the Court of Appeals vacated the defendant’s convictions arising from the display of a vulgar banner at a county board of commissioners meeting (warning: the vulgar language is repeated in this episode). In State v. Wilson, No. COA24-58 (N.C. Ct. App. Nov. 5, 2025), the Court of Appeals found no violation of the defendant’s right to a jury of twelve when the trial court referred to its review of evidence as part of the jury’s deliberation. And in State v. Hickman, No. COA24-893 (N.C. Ct. App. Nov. 5, 2025), the Court of Appeals concluded that a Tax Warrant did not authorize officers to conduct a search of the defendant’s home.
